Art of the Home Tip – an easy way to sanitize your kitchen sponge and dish brush is to stick them in the dishwasher. No need to put them in each time you run the dishwasher, once a week is good enough. It will give your sponge a face lift and all those germs a sanitizing hot bath! So, as you are loading the dishwasher, simply place your sponge and brush inside one of the utensil bins or on the top rack and voilà! It is also not a bad idea to replace your sponge monthly. For example, you can replace it on the 1st of every month so you won’t forget. Happy cleaning!

Quelle bonne astuce, je vais essayer, merci pour le tuyau.

Actually, some people think the wet warm sponge sitting in the dishwasher, even though it’s just been “cleaned,” is a hotbed for bacteria. I don’t use sponges, but if I did I’d try the microwave.
Foggy in California
Thank you for your comment Foggy. That is something to keep in mind and the USDA did study that point in 2007. They found that microwaving a wet sponge (for 1 min.) killed 99.9999% of bacteria while running a sponge through a dishwasher cycle eliminated 99.9998% of bacteria. It is essential however that the dishwasher goes through the drying cycle so if you are letting the dishes air dry, the microwave solution you pointed out may be better. Thanks again for your feedback!
