Weekend Dessert: How about a Quick & Easy Crème Brûlée?

Today, let’s see how we can use an off-the-shelf mix to create a restaurant like dessert at home.  When we don’t have time or simply don’t have all the ingredients handy to make a homemade crème brûlée, Dr. Oetker Classic Crème Brûlée is an excellent choice. A homemade crème brûlée is ready to serve in about 5 hours whereas the Dr. Oetker Classic Crème Brûlée is prepared in less than 1 minute and ready to eat in one hour so it is a convenient, and delicious, alternative. Perhaps, your “little chefs” may decide to join you in the kitchen for a weekend cooking activity.  They’ll love to see what they could make if they became a chef in a French restaurant.  And consider this, at 110 calories per serving, it is a very reasonable treat.

So let’s get started.

What you will need:

  1. Dr. Oetker Classic Crème Brûlée Premium Dessert Mix
  2. 1 cup of milk
  3. 1 cup of whipping cream
  4. 4 ramekins (or small oven safe dishes)
  5. Strawberries, raspberries or blueberries (optional)

Directions:

  1. In a saucepan, mix milk and whipping cream over medium heat.
  2. Whisk crème brûlée powder mix.
  3. Bring to a gentle boil while stirring.
  4. Lower heat to simmer for 30 sec.
  5. Place ramekins on cookie sheet and pour mixture into the ramekins.
  6. After 1 hour (a thin skin should have formed on top), sprinkle with the caramelized sugar provided.
  7. Place cookie sheet with the ramekins in the oven and broil for 3-4 min until the sugar on top has browned (may be less depending on your oven).
  8. With oven mittens, take ramekins and place on a small desert plate before serving.

Art of the Home suggestion: to add color to this dessert, simply add a few blueberries and raspberries (or cut strawberries) on a small area on top of the crème brûlée.

Enjoy and bon appétit!!!

Merci for your comment Cheryl! Feel free to let us know how your creme brulee turns out and how you liked it. Enjoy!

  3. Sheri says:

I love this brand! I surprised my husband with it and even though we’re picky about our creme brulee, this made us both happy until we could get to our favorite restaurant!

  4. Art of the Home says:

Bonjour Sheri, that’s right, this is a great way to bring the restaurant experience home until it’s time for your next date. “Monsieur Art of the Home” loves this crème brûlée too. Thanks for sharing!

Haven’t seen this locally 15905, how can I find it? It is great, agree with Sherri.

  6. My problem is this. I used to have this brand available to me locally; I liked their products. Then one day when I moved about seven years ago, the supermarket cut back and did away with that location in their chain and Oetkers was no longer available to me. They did not ever carry it in their “Mother” store.

I am vey disappointed. Where can I obtain this product today, now that you mention it?

Bonjour Jodi, I suggest trying the international food aisle of your local grocery store, sometimes it’s in the bakery section too. Amazon also sells it at http://goo.gl/827Ph but the shipping is pricey so you may want to group with friends or buy several boxes at once (I’m pretty sure you won’t have a problem finding volunteers to eat it). Good luck!

Bonjour Dianne, as I was mentioning to Jodi, if you can’t find it locally, you may want to try Amazon.com. You can find it here http://goo.gl/827Ph . The problem is the shipping, pretty expensive, but if you group the purchase it may work for you. Best of luck finding it!

My husband is a Creme Brulee lover. I have been using Dr/ Oetker’s for years and it is the best!
I am in Massachusetts and our local supermarket carries it in the pudding section. i have also seen it in specialty/gourmet stores. You can’t go wrong with this product. The only thing i would caution is you need to stir it often as it will stick somewhat to the bottom of the pan and you may distribute burned pieces into the custard if not diligent about stirring. Do not scrape the bottom when stirring. Good Luck and Bon Appetit.
