Serge Gainsbourg said “She Exulted Femininity”

An exhibition opens today in Paris featuring rare pictures of Serge Gainsbourg to commemorate the 20 years anniversary of his death. Gainsbourg, a cultural icon in France is not very known in the US but one of his love certainly is: sex-symbol Brigitte Bardot (who gained fame in the US with her portrayal of Juliette in “And God created Woman”). The passionate love affair they shared was short and happened more than 40 years ago but France is still talking about it.

Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg

He called their story a “magnifique passion” and Bardot called him “the man of my most beautiful nights.”  He said she exulted a feminity such that no men could stay indifferent to — he was paralysed by her beauty and class. This love story started in the Winter of 1967 when she asked him to write songs for a show that she was headlining on French TV.  Their passion seemed unlikely because of her status as a sex symbol and he was self-admittedly not the most handsome and timid — but she found him handsome and that inspired him to compose some his best songs.   He wrote magnificient lyrics for her including the famous sensual song “Je t’aime moi non plus” (I love you… me neither).  She asked him not to release the song as she was married to another man at the time.  He gallantly complied (the Bardot-Gainsbourg version recorded in 1967 was eventually released in 1987) and he recorded the song with his next muse, Jane Birkin,  in 1969.  The “Je t’aime moi non plus” record reached N0.1 but was censored in many countries and only allowed for purchase by those 18 years and older in France.  In 1967, Bardot and Gainsbourg did sing the duet together “Bonnie & Clyde”:

In the video below, Bardot sings “Harley Davidson” written for her by Serge Gainsbourg.  The video montage includes beautiful pictures of B.B. (her nickname in France).   Enjoy…
