Fruits and Vegetables to Help your Skin Look Healthy

It’s still winter and with warmer days not too far away…

Why not give our skin a boost while we enjoy a good meal.  Vitamin A and its sister pro-vitamin A (also called beta-carotene) can help your skin look healthier.   Vitamin A helps regenerate skin cells, slows down the aging process and helps prevent wrinkles.  Pro-vitamin A also helps your skin get ready for sun rays.

Below is a list of some foods rich in Vitamin A (animal foods) and pro-Vitamin A (fruits and vegetables).   Now, keep in mind that too much pro-vitamin A would give a slight orange tint to your skin.  But really, can we eat that many carrots?

Foods rich in Vitamin A

  • Fatty fish (cod, salmon, tuna)
  • Liver
  • Butter
  • Egg yolk
  • Whole milk

Foods rich in Pro-vitamin A

  • Carrots
  • Spinach
  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Green salad
  • Pumpkins
  • Apricot
  • Peach
  • Mango

In the winter when fresh fruits are less available, or if you like dry fruits, consider eating dried apricots.  They have an increased ratio of pro-vitamin A compared to the fresh apricot.  Add them to a yogurt or with your cereal.

Carrots also have the reputation of helping you see better —  as Papa would say “T’as déjà vu un lapin avec des lunettes?” (Have you ever seen a rabbit with glasses?).  To help with that eye sight and beta-carotene, you can try our quick and easy braised carrots recipe.

So, let’s get ready for the sun and eat fruits and vegetables to help us get there!
