At the Farmers Market: 5 Beautiful French Market Baskets

Today, we are sharing pictures of 5 traditional French market baskets used by French women to shop at the farmers market.   We took them the other day at our local market, what a pleasure to see this dance of market baskets!   If you are looking for style ideas, simply go to a French farmers market and you will be amazed by the selection – larger than in any catalog you can find!  They come in all shapes, sizes and colors.  It’s also interesting to see the different ways women choose to hold it – everybody has their own personality.   So today, we are focusing on the old-fashion types of French market baskets but this is just the beginning of our love story with market baskets so there is more to come!

At the Farmers Market: 5 Traditional French Market Baskets

So check the 5 baskets below and cast your vote to let us know which one is your favorite: 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 (as hard as it may be, you have to pick just one, sorry!).  So let’s begin:

  • French market basket #1: # 1 has leather straps and leather trim.  Love this French lady’s bracelet!

  • French market basket # 2: #2 has leather straps only and is the most common basket seen at the farmers market.  This is the old-fashion French soft market basket — just short leather straps for a snug fit.

  • French market basket #3: # 3 is larger than the old-fashion basket and has a flat bottom which allows you to set your basket on the ground  – an advantage when you need both hands to check out fruits and vegetables.  We saw a lot of #3 as well.

  • French market basket #4: #4 has leather straps all around which makes it more durable.

I love basket #1, Beautiful! A great idea!

  3. Cheryl says:

#4 (although I wish the straps were longer :)

  4. Basket Number 3 with the flat bottom definitely as a market basket.

  5. Debbie says:

It is close between 2 and 4…but I think I’d go with 4 as it looks to be sturdier…so when I pick up the heavier items…like melons I wouldn’t break the basket! Thanks for the opportunity to comment.

  6. Michelle says:

    #3!!!! Because it’s the prettiest! :D

  7. April Schneider says:

basket no. 4 is the best

    Market Basket No. 3

  10. Janice says:

    # 2 is my choice, love the green dress and the little girl. So cute.

  11. Barbara Boucher says:

    # 3 much more roomy !!

i’m wearing mine for 15 years….i’ve the #2 …very fashionable, from the market to the beach!

I chose #1 and #3, like to have both!!

  14. Heather MacDonald says:

    #3 is beautiful!

  15. Gabrielle says:

#2 is most authentic, but #3 is most appealing.

  16. Wanda hammond says:

#1looks like it is the best for shopping!

  17. Would have to say # 3 because of the flat bottom…….

  18. DebW says:

    #3

  19. Sue says:

I like #5…but I’d like it better if the straps were leather/wider – a bit more comfortable on the shoulder….I’m a sucker for a shoulder bag cuz it leaves my hands free to select the produce….

  20. Martha says:

#3…just would have to be careful with my “load.”

I also like #5 but have to agree with Sue…it doesn’t look too comfy (the straps.)

  21. Di says:

#3 would be my pick – the flat bottom looks useful – but any of the others would be a good choice too – hmmmm, time to go shopping for one, methinks ;)

  22. Shelly says:

Number one! I love the leather around the brim of the basket. Very pretty.

  23. Linda says:

    #5

  24. Martine says:

It is a toss up between #3 and #5. I love the functionaly of the squared basket, but the traditional shape and the long handles has to be my choice!
Would love to be able to get them over here in Texas!

  25. Helen says:

#1 – I like the leather all around, will wear better over time, but any of them would do!

  26. Art of the Home says:

  27. D'Etta says:

#5 – shoulder strap helps with heavy loads.

  28. Mary O'Neill says:

Love # 5—because it keeps your hands free!

  29. linda hannsh says:

Loved them all but number 4 was my favorite. Would love to know where to get them.
